The Dana Street Saga Tuesday, March 5, 1974 - 9:20 AM Read in my journal for a little while last night before going to bed, back in the period before I met Charmaine. Saw that my life then was very much as it is these days, with me aching to find a girl to love, being hurt by Judith at my vulnerable stage, and being still hung up on Lyndy. Went to bed around 11:30. Had a dream. In it, Charmaine was twins. They went off with two guys, one black and one white, although somewhat reluctantly. I don't recall the exact situation. But soon I heard Charmaine calling for help, "Help, Ralph, David!" So I went running downstairs looking for her and calling her so she could tell me where she was. I got to the room where she was with the black guy, and I stood and waited while she got up and left him. He just lay there on a bed. She left with me. We looked for her twin, but couldn't find her or any trace of her. That's about all. Another vague segment had to do with business, something about IBM and a small computer company. I can't remember it. Today's sort of cloudy, though it may clear up. I'm feeling confused and uncertain again, about my relationship with Terri. Seeing Charmaine again has made me want her, even though I know it's hopeless, and that she doesn't care about me, yet I would like to be open to spending a night with her before she heads back east. I think I could learn some more about what happened with us, and why. And, though I think of Terri as a much nicer person, she doesn't excite me sexually to the extent Charmaine did, and still does. 3:45 PM Today has been a pretty nice day for me. The sun came out and warmed things up, and burned away some of the haze. After breakfast I went out to get gas, taking my two 2-gallon containers, and found a station where I only had to wait a half-hour or so. The gas situation is really ridiculous these days. Called Terri around 11. We decided to wait for a nicer day to go for a ride. We both had some errands to do. After awhile, I walked up to the Med. Saw Penny's VW bus parked on Dwight Way, so looked for her, but she wasn't there, so I walked across to Eclair, but she wasn't there either. Anyway, as I was coming back across, I saw the blonde girl I'd wanted to meet on Sunday, walking up towards the Med. I walked right up to her, smiled, and said, "Hi, what's your name?" She said, "Jane." I said, "I've been wanting to meet you for awhile now." She asked my name, and I told her, and invited her to have coffee with me, which she accepted. We had a nice friendly chat. She's been in Berkeley five years, came out to go to school (from Westfield, New Jersey), and did, but dropped out before finishing. She lives in a big old house on Panoramic Way with some other people; Susan, Judy (the guitarist), Felter, and a couple more. She has a black VW and a dog named Jackson. We talked about getting out of Berkeley. I asked if she had a few minutes, as I wanted to show her my house, but she didn't have time, but when I told her where it was, it turned out she used to live there about three years ago. Anyway, she said she'd come over some time. I told her a little about myself in passing, and the vibes were pretty good. She said she'd noticed me recently, too. It seems like there are possibilities, as I've noticed her noticing me before, a few times. After saying goodbye to her there, I walked up to the bank looking for California tax forms. Saw Lois, and went up and said, "Hi." She said, "Wow, I was just thinking about you, and about the party." It blew her mind that I appeared just at that moment. We chatted warmly, then I split. Went to the Post Office, where I got stamps and the California tax forms. Came home and worked on Pegasus awhile, adjusting and oiling the chain. Called Penny and rapped awhile. Then went up to the Med again, after going to Cyrina's to get my blanket, but she wasn't home. At the Med, I saw Irene, who'd just gotten back from Mexico last night, and will be going to Canada in about a month. She had to leave, so we didn't get to talk much. Came home. I'm feeling pretty good again. Oh yes, I played a few games of pinball on "my machine," the last ones before they took it away. Sad. But maybe now I'll break my pinball habit. previous - next - - index - - - - I Ching Start at the beginning? Read the Preface? If you'd like, you can leave me a comment in
